The Royal Commission is the lead body in Wales for setting data standards for the historic environment sector and we work closely with our colleagues in other Welsh and UK institutions to ensure compatibility between information resources. We are currently contributing to the development of a single standard for the UK, known as MIDAS UK, which will set out agreed standards for monument character, events, people and organisations.
The adoption of a single data standard will allow us to build access networks so that information resources can be simultaneously queried to retrieve records from across the United Kingdom. These aims are being pursued with members of the Forum for Information Standards in Heritage. This organisation is a UK-wide group of information managers from the historic environment sector who meet twice a year.
We are also developing standards in the Welsh language so that our databases can be searched in either Welsh or English.
