Using our Resources

The Learning Section contains material to support and enrich the National Curriculum and Curriculum Cymreig / Wales as well as ideas on how our material can be used in the classroom.

The National Monuments Record of Wales (NMRW) holds over 1.25 million photographs and many thousands of plans, maps, reports and drawings recording the historic environment of Wales. Within this vast collection there are valuable resources for teachers and learners of all ages, covering a wide variety of curriculum subjects and the requirements of the Curriculum Cymreig.

The archive can be accessed through Coflein or by contacting our enquiry service

Coflein is the Royal Commission’s public online database. It combines information about archaeological sites and buildings of all periods with catalogue information about the NMRW archive collections. Information and images can be viewed and downloaded directly from Coflein. Coflein is suitable for pupils to search for information about historical sites in Wales and to develop ICT skills, e.g.the use of GIS, interpreting maps and imagery.

Royal Commission staff have been carrying out archaeological aerial photography in Wales since 1986 and the NMRW holds an unique collection of aerial photographs. The collection includes oblique aerial photographs taken between c.1950-70 and vertical aerial photographs of most of Wales taken since c.1945. They are a valuable resource for the classroom.

The Commission’s images and aerial photographs, from all over Wales, are an excellent source for historical and geographical enquiries. They can be used to identify and explore the diversity of the natural and human landscapes in Wales, to study types of buildings or to compare and contrast places and note how they have changed over time.
