How to use Coflein
There are two ways to search for information through Coflein: by using the mapping facility or by a text search. Either method will give the same access to the National Monuments Record of Wales database.
The mapping facility is more useful when you know the location of a particular site or would like to see what else is in the locality, as it allows you to pan around a map of Wales, zooming in and out through various map scales, until you find the site or area of interest. You can query sites individually for information or select several together.
The text search is better for finding particular types of monument or for finding sites by other classification, such as name, broad class or period, but can also be used for finding sites in pre-defined areas such as a community or county, or even an Ordnance Survey five kilometre grid square. It is the quickest searching method for archaeological or architectural sites and monuments with images and there is also a keyword facility which searches for all occurrences of the specified words throughout the database.
When you have found the site you are looking for a selection of information from the National Monuments Record of Wales database will be displayed, including the name, location and type of site, monument or building. A text description is also provided, where completed, together with catalogue information for items relating to the site in the National Monuments Record of Wales archive, and access to any online images.
