The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales

The Commission co-ordinates the CARN service and we also contribute our National Monuments Record of Wales database. The index-level information in CARN provides a link to fuller records available on the Coflein database. This allows users to retrieve descriptive information about sites, associated archive items and digitised content, including images and documents.

Cadw

Cadw is responsible for conserving and protecting the historic environment and contributes an index to its Scheduled Ancient Monuments database. It is hoped that future developments will allow the inclusion of its Listed Buildings and Registered Parks and Gardens databases in a portal to historic environment records.

National Museum of Wales

The Archaeology and Numismatics Department of the National Museum of Wales contributes its objects database to the index. The information is represented as a series of find locations across Wales, with an indication of the number of objects recovered from each position.

Portable Antiquities Scheme

The Portable Antiquities Scheme maintains a record of objects found by the public in England and Wales. An index to the Welsh part of this database is provided in CARN.

The Welsh Archaeological Trusts

Each of the four Welsh Archaeological Trusts maintains a sites and monuments record for their area. The Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust maintains the record for north-east Wales, the Gwynedd Archaeological Trust covers north-west Wales, and south Wales is covered by the Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust in the east and Cambria Archaeology in the west.
