Future Developments

Since CARN went live in 2000 there have been several developments, including the addition of data from the Portable Antiquities Scheme, the expansion of data made available from the Royal Commission database, and the inclusion of information from the archaeology collections of the National Museum of Wales. This has seen the number of records available increase from 120,000 in 2000 to nearly 200,000 in 2009.

New portal developments across the historic environment sector in Wales make it possible to link directly to on-line databases. Records from the Royal Commission now link directly to the expanded description, archive references and digitised content available on Coflein. It is anticipated that this will be possible for all the partners as they develop on-line resources in the coming years.

The development of CARN should also be seen in the context of the Historic Wales Portal for information relating to the Welsh historic environment.
