The National Monuments Record of Wales holds material of relevance to students of history, archaeology, architecture, geography, art and design, agriculture, film studies, and religious studies. Students on professional courses such as Archives, Library and Information Science, Museum Studies, and Heritage Studies will also find practical aspects of our work of interest.

So, if you are a student, at any level from Further Education to PhD research, we would be delighted to help you with materials for your academic studies and research. Information held by the National Monuments Record of Wales that will be of special interest to students includes:

Photographs – both modern and historic.

Aerial photographs.

Drawings – reconstructions, cutaways etc.

Written reports.

Maps.

Notebooks.

Theses.

Special collections.

Library – specialist books and journals (in some cases going back to the nineteenth century) on history, archaeology, architecture, gardens, industrial archaeology, and reference books such as dictionaries, glossaries, biographical dictionaries.

All this information can be brought together to help with your essays, dissertations and theses.

The first point of entry to our information and collections is Coflein, our public online database. Once you have found the site you want and discover from the catalogue that we have archive material available, you can send an enquiry to our Library and Enquiries Service department on an online enquiry form. However, if you cannot find what you want on Coflein please do not hesitate to contact us, as our staff may be able to search for material in collections or suggest other organisations that may be able to help you. You can also contact our enquiries team by telephone, fax, letter, or in person. If you are able to visit our library in Aberystwyth to conduct your research in person please contact us for an appointment, giving as much information about your field of study as possible. We will then retrieve the relevant materials and have them ready for your visit.

We can also arrange group visits for students and their lecturers. Recent visits have included:

A group of students studying medieval buildings, who received a presentation from an architectural historian and then viewed specially selected items from the archive.

Art students looking at our Chapels collection and receiving tuition from members of staff involved in the Chapels Project.

Archaeology students from both further and higher education, in a large group with a presentation from our Aerial Photography Investigator; and in seminar groups with a lecturer using maps and aerial photographs. We can also arrange for tuition in surveying techniques using state-of-the-art equipment.

Students on Heritage Studies courses have had small tutorials on the administrative systems attached to listed buildings and other protected monuments.

Archivists, librarians and information studies students come to see our information systems, our archive facilities and some of our innovative projects – such as heritage guides on hand-held computers.

Continuing education courses also make use of our facilities for both tailored presentations and looking at archive material.

We can arrange for student placements or work experience. Please contact our Human Resources Officer if you would like to spend time working alongside one of our specialist staff, or simply would like to spend a little time seeing how the Royal Commission works.

Photocopies of selected information and scans of images can be provided, subject to copyright restrictions. Please see the price list, there is a 20% student discount.
