Celebrating 100 years of investigating archaeology, buildings and landscapes in Wales

The Royal Commission is celebrating its centenary during the year 2008-2009. Here on the website you can find details of the features and events arranged to mark this milestone.

The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales is the national body of research and record for the historic environment of Wales. Established in 1908, it is a Welsh Assembly Government Sponsored Body. The Commission works closely with other heritage organisations in Wales and internationally to develop and promote understanding of the archaeological, built and maritime heritage.

A Centenary Exhibition is visiting locations across Wales during the year. Check the exhibition page to find out when it will be at a location near you. Collecting Our Past is an exhibition of treasures from the National Monuments Record of Wales. Many of these original records and artefacts have never been exhibited before. It will be shown at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, and later at the National Museum Wales in Cardiff. In Ancient Monuments, Present Words, Planet magazine has commissioned some of the best writers in Wales to engage with archive images made or collected by the Commission over the past hundred years.

In autumn 2008 the work of the Royal Commission will feature in a television series, Hidden Histories, produced by Element for BBC Wales. A book telling the story of Wales through monuments, buildings and landscapes will accompany the series.

Whether you are planning a visit to Wales, investigating your local community, researching, managing the environment, doing picture research, looking for excellent learning resources, or just exploring our country’s rich heritage, we hope this website and our linked online databases, Coflein and Historic Wales, will help you to discover more about the buildings, landscapes, archaeological sites and history of Wales and about the resources and services we provide.

You can explore the site in Welsh or in English.
